ALBERTO VALNER is the founder and president of PHASE ONE. In 1998 Alberto Valner and his mother were both diagnosed with very different types of cancer within days of each other: Alberto, with stage 4 testicular cancer that had metastasized throughout his body; and his mother, with a rare type of cancer and very little time to live. While Alberto survived and is cancer-free, little was known about his mother’s type of cancer, and she passed within days of Alberto being given the “all clear.” Alberto and his wife Stacy were moved to action and PHASE ONE was founded in 1999. They gathered a small group of friends in Los Angeles to support early cancer research. Their mission was to find treatments that will transform what might be a terminal illness into hope for a full and productive life. Alberto hopes that PHASE ONE will continue to operate and grow within the community until a cure for all cancer is found.
